United Kingdom: all railway services will be run by the state as franchises will not be renewed or could be terminated earlier for breach of contract.
The news came in that thousands of rail workers could lose their jobs as the wind is blowing against privately run services. One wonders what will happen to salary rises given to drivers contracted by private companies. This is seen as the biggest shake up of railway services. In 1997, under Tony Blair, there was the expectation that railway services would be taken over and it never happened. In 2005, what did not happen during the previous Labour administration would now be a given.
Lets wait and see. The talk is about cutting down running costs and gettting rid of duplication, but there is no mention of any reduction of the prices of travelling tickets.
